The Best Piece of Advice
The greatest piece of advice I have ever received is:
- Love God fully — “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.”
- Love others genuinely — “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
These two commandments are not only the essence of faith but also the guiding principles for life.
Foundation and Blueprint
Foundation
The foundation is the solid base upon which everything rests. In biblical terms, loving God and loving others is the starting point of life and faith. Without this, nothing else can stand securely.
Foundation in Scripture
- Christ as the foundation — “For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 3:11)
- Wisdom as foundation — Proverbs describes wisdom and the fear of the Lord as the beginning and the basis of knowledge.
- Faith as foundation — Hebrews 11 shows that trust in God is the grounding of all spiritual life.
- Obedience as foundation — Jesus’ parable of the wise and foolish builders (Matthew 7:24–27) illustrates that hearing and obeying His words is like building on rock, not sand.
Meaning: A foundation is what holds everything together. Without it, the structure collapses. In biblical terms, the foundation is God Himself—His truth, His wisdom, His Son. It is not just intellectual knowledge but a lived reality: trust, obedience, and love.
Blueprint
The blueprint is the plan or design that guides how the structure is built. In Scripture, those two commandments don’t just serve as the base; they also shape the way we live. They give direction, showing how every choice, action, and relationship should be constructed.
Distinction from Foundation
- Foundation = the base, the unshakable ground.
- Blueprint = the plan or design for how life should be built.
Together, they capture the full picture: love is both the ground we stand on and the plan we follow.
Daily Life Application
When Jesus says the greatest commandment is to love God and love others, He is giving both the foundation (love as the base of faith) and the blueprint (love as the guiding plan for how to live). This means:
- Every decision is measured against love.
- Every relationship is shaped by love.
- Every challenge is met with love.
Love becomes both the stability beneath us and the design before us.
Conclusion
The greatest advice — to love God fully and love others genuinely — is both the foundation and the blueprint of life. It grounds us in what is eternal and guides us in how to live each day.
With this foundation and blueprint, everything else flows: wisdom, faith, obedience, and purpose. Love is the base we stand on and the plan we follow, ensuring that our lives are built securely and beautifully.
