How My View of Prayer Changed Over Time

Daily Prompt

When I was young, I was taught to kneel during prayer. For an extended period, I assumed that position whenever I prayed. I vividly recall pressing my knees against the cold hardwood floor beside my bed each night, tightly interlacing my fingers and resting my chin on my hands. To my young mind, it seemed like a strict, inflexible rule.

I had observed that exact posture illustrated in church, in all my childhood storybooks, and watched characters perform it during emotional scenes in old films. I was completely convinced that if my knees did not remain on the ground, my words would lack the power to reach the ceiling, let alone heaven. When I forgot and prayed while lying down, a wave of guilt would overwhelm me, prompting me to hastily rise and correct my mistake.

As I matured, I realized that prayer can occur anywhere and in any position. The rigid, black-and-white rules of childhood gradually dissolved into a more profound and personal understanding. I discovered that a meaningful conversation with the divine does not necessitate a physical performance, a specific location, or uncomfortable joints.

Today, I pray anywhere, anytime, while walking through a tranquil park, driving along a hectic highway during a stressful commute, sitting silently at a desk, or simply lying awake beneath the covers at night.

I now comprehend that the kneeling posture I practiced for many years is merely a traditional symbol of respect, not an absolute requirement. It is the posture and sincerity of the heart, rather than the position of the body, that holds true significance.
