When I think about cultural traditions the United States could benefit from, my heart goes immediately to Ubuntu — a powerful African philosophy and way of life rooted in the Bantu cultures of Southern Africa. Ubuntu translates to “I am because we are,” a reminder that our humanity is woven together, and that no person stands alone.
In many African communities, Ubuntu isn’t an idea you talk about — it’s a way of living. It shapes how people see themselves, how they treat one another, and how they move through the world. A person’s identity is not defined by individual achievement but by the well‑being of the community. Your joy, your pain, your progress, and your healing are shared.
Ubuntu expresses itself through daily actions: open hospitality, where strangers are welcomed without hesitation; community child‑rearing, where every adult carries responsibility for every child; collective decision‑making, where consensus matters more than winning; and shared labor, where neighbors build, harvest, and support one another without expecting payment.
This philosophy played a profound role in South Africa’s healing after Apartheid. Leaders like Nelson Mandela and Archbishop Desmond Tutu used Ubuntu to guide the Truth and Reconciliation process — choosing restoration over revenge, unity over division.
If I could bring one tradition into American culture, it would be this: the understanding that my humanity is bound to yours, and yours to mine.
Ubuntu reminds us that fulfillment doesn’t come from isolation, competition, or individual striving. It comes from recognizing our shared humanity — from lifting one another, caring for one another, and remembering that we rise together.
That’s such a great African philosophy, and is one of my most favorite philosophies I’ve ever heard of. ☺️
Open hospitality, community child-rearing, collective decision-making, and shared labor are really important when we apply this philosophy, and it reflects on kindness, compassion, and cooperation. 👍
Here’s a thing: Ubuntu is also a Linux distribution for computers! 💻
