When the Spirit Is Free

Beyond the Horizon of Time

If someone asked me to choose a year to live again, I would decline the invitation. No season of my journey calls me back. Every joy, every wound, every victory, and every loss has already fulfilled its purpose. Each experience has left its imprint, shaping the person standing here today. To return would be to step away from the unfolding path ahead.

My attention rests neither in what has vanished nor in what remains unseen. It rests in the living instant before me. What has come before exists as a collection of lessons and impressions woven into my character. I carry their influence, but I do not dwell within them. Their significance lies in the way they have molded me, not in the possibility of experiencing them again.

Should another dawn arrive, I will greet it openly. Whatever it brings, celebration or struggle, clarity or uncertainty, it will offer something of value. Every encounter refines understanding. Every challenge reveals hidden strength. Every discovery expands awareness. Life is not a static identity to preserve but an endless unfolding of growth.

I do not wish to remain fixed in any earlier version of myself. The individual I once was served a purpose for that moment, just as the individual I am now serves a purpose for this one. Existence is movement, transformation, and emergence. There is beauty in allowing oneself to evolve without clinging to old chapters or attempting to predict those yet unwritten.

Recollections will always remain. Certain memories will inspire gratitude, others reflection. They form a gallery of experiences that can be visited, but they are not a place of residence. Looking through them can provide understanding, yet they are not meant to become permanent destinations. Their role is to illuminate the path, not to become the path itself.

At the deepest level, I believe true liberation arrives when all attachment to chronology dissolves. In that state, there is no yearning for yesterday and no reaching toward tomorrow. There is only pure awareness, unburdened by comparison, expectation, or regret. Existence is experienced directly, without measuring it against what once was or what might someday be.

In such freedom, clocks lose their significance. The divisions of past, present, and future no longer compete for attention. There is simply presence, serenity, and wholeness. Life ceases to be a sequence of moments and becomes a complete experience unfolding naturally.

So if the question arises again, my answer remains unchanged. I would not choose any year to revisit. Every chapter has already given its gift. What holds value is this unfolding instant, the continual evolution that follows it, and the opportunity to meet whatever comes next with an open heart. For the greatest treasure is not the chance to live again, but the privilege of continually becoming!

Betty, I’m not sure why I’m unable to physically “like” your post, but please know it truly resonated with me. Most days, I am just so exhausted from piecing my life back together after my time as a caregiver. I often think of you and wonder how your writing is going. Today, I read your latest blog post and was deeply moved by this line: “If someone asked me to choose a year to live again, I would decline the invitation. No season of my journey calls me back. Every joy, every wound, every victory, and every loss has already fulfilled its purpose.” Wow! Thank you for sharing that.

Don’t worry about not being able to “like” the post, Annette—I’ve run into that same glitch on other blogs! Just reading and leaving such thoughtful comments means the world to me. 😇

Thank you for sharing your journey, Annette. Rebuilding your life after giving so much as a caregiver takes immense time and courage. I hope you will be gentle with yourself as you navigate this new beginning. Healing and personal growth aren’t races; they unfold at their own pace.

Right now is all we truly have. Tomorrow is never guaranteed, so focusing on the present moment—and finding peace and joy within it—is so vital. That practice has brought me deep comfort! Please know that God is with you in every single moment, and every step of your journey has served, is serving, and will continue to serve, a divine purpose!🙏🕊️

I pray your journey into this next chapter will be filled with light, comfort, and lasting peace!🌟✨🙌

  2. Betty, this is a deeply contemplative reflection on the art of living in the present. 🙏

To refuse to return to any past year is not rejection of one’s memories; it is acceptance of the journey in its entirety. Every experience joy or sorrow has been a teacher. Once its lesson is received, there is no need to keep returning to the classroom.

The deepest wisdom lies in what you beautifully express: the past can be honoured without being inhabited, and the future can be welcomed without being possessed.

When the mind rests fully in the present, time loses its authority and awareness becomes its own sanctuary. Then life is no longer about becoming someone we once were, but awakening to who we are in this very moment.

A beautiful reminder: do not turn back to repeat the chapter; turn within to understand its meaning. 🙏

Vijay, thank you for this profound and beautifully expressed reinterpretation of my reflection! You have taken the thought even deeper, especially in the way you describe the past as something to be honoured but not inhabited. I truly appreciate the wisdom, grace, and spiritual insight you brought to this response! Your words are a meaningful reminder to remain present, grateful, and awake to the lesson within each moment! 🙏 Thank you!
